The Bacteo story - the fight against COVID-19 from concept to product

2020 wasn’t an ordinary year. And this will not be an ordinary “About us” page. Instead of grand mission statements, we decided to simply tell you the story of Bacteo from the beginning to the end.

So how did it all start?

In the Spring of 2020, the world was plunged into chaos by the rapid spread of the COVID-19 coronavirus. In the space of a couple of weeks, the world changed. Along with the huge suffering the disease caused to the people who contracted it and their families, there was also the uncertainty. Governments panicked, hospitals ran out of vital equipment, and confusion reigned as people lacked vital information on how to act.

Amidst this chaos, we wanted to keep our focus and act decisively to find a technological solution that could ease the burden on ordinary people.

March 2020 - Bacteo is born

As the scale of the COVID-19 crisis started to become clear, the Bacteo team - a group of 3 friends who are serial inventors and entrepreneurs - started looking for a tech solution to help. We wanted to offer better hygiene, improved safety, and peace of mind to both businesses and households. So we started looking into which technologies could be used to help.

Bacteo is headed up by 3 inventor entrepreneurs on a mission to find tech solutions to the COVID-19 crisis

We realised that there is a technology that can help - ultraviolet light (UVC). UVC can kill or render inactive harmful pathogens including coronaviruses. It's been used in the healthcare sector for this purpose for over 40 years.

But we saw that there were no suitable UVC lamps on the market for disinfecting workplaces, rental apartments, beauty salons or homes. Existing lamps use plastic or aluminium enclosures that absorb UVC light and limit its effectiveness. What's more, disinfecting with these lamps takes a lot of time and effort, and creates an unpleasant ozone smell.

So we set about designing a lamp that is powerful, effective, and effortless to use. We established a new company, Bacteo, and brought together a team of experienced engineers and developers to find a better way to harness the pathogen-killing potential of UVC.

The story of Bacteo had begun.

May 2020 - from concept to prototype

Designing a safe, easy-to-use UVC lamp for fighting coronavirus meant we had to solve a range of technical issues:

                      • How could we make it safe to use? UV rays can be harmful if you are regularly exposed to them, so we wanted to ensure users are rarely or never exposed.
                      • And how could we ensure it was robust enough for regular long-term use, and had the power to disinfect large areas like rental spaces and beauty salons?

To resolve these questions we developed a range of different prototypes, trying out various materials and safety features. After extensive research and experimentation, we settled on the core elements of the Bacteo Tower Lamp:

- A stainless steel frame,
- A doppler effect motion sensor to ensure the lamp switches off if anyone enters the room.

With the casing, frame and electronic components decided on, the Bacteo was taking shape

One really important development at this stage was partnering up with Phillips / Signify. Together with them, we identified the best UVC product available in terms of its proven ability to kill coronaviruses - the Philips TUV PL-L 95W/4P HO 1CT/25 UV-C light tube. This light tube is the only UVC technology for which there is actual medical evidence that it kills coronaviruses. While other UVC lamps state that they do, so far this is the only technology that can back up this claim. The Bacteo was built to be compatible with this powerful, highly-effective light tube.

The Bacteo Tower Lamp uses a 95 watt Philips Signify UVC lamp, proven to be highly effective in killing coronaviruses

With Phillips on board, and the core elements of the device in place, the Bacteo was taking place.

July 2020 - testing and quality certification

The product was nearing production, so it was time to thoroughly test it and gain the necessary certification. We carry out our own extensive internal testing on every product we develop, to ensure they meet our high quality standards.

And for the Bacteo Power Lamp, we wanted it to have the highest European quality certification. So we applied for CE Certification (an EU quality standard) and RoHs certification (a quality standard related to the EU’s direction on the Restriction of Hazardous Substances).

September 2020 - from prototype to production

Since we started manufacturing consumer electronics products back in 2013, we have managed all of our production locally in the EU. We do this to ensure the very highest quality standards, and to be able to monitor closely the production process. That’s why we are able to offer 2 year guarantees on the Bacteo Tower Lamp.

With the Bacteo in production, we were ready to share our innovation with the world and help it get back to business.

Who are we - about the Bacteo team

We wanted to start this section with a huge THANK YOU to our team of engineers. These are ordinary people who, like you, had their lives turned upside down by the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic. In these challenging times, they dedicated their hours after work to developing a solution that could actually help the world recover, which is not an easy task.

So thank you guys.

And what about the rest of us? Who we are, and how did we all meet?

We are a team that isn’t new to tech and innovation. We have 7 years’ experience developing innovative tech products that have won 40+ awards, including CES awards, and have been exported to over 50 countries.

The inspiration for our first product, the Deeper Smart Sonar, came when two of us, Aurelijus and Rolandas, went on a fishing trip together in Finland.

Since then, we have developed 5 different electronics products, one of which picked up a CES Innovation Award. These products now sell in over 50 countries around the world, and we now have over 400,000 satisfied customers. In the process, we have learned how to build robust, reliable products that meet real customer needs. We are also continually refining and improving our production and distribution processes, so we can offer the best possible customer experience.

At Bacteo, we believe in harnessing the power of technology to solve the biggest problems society is facing. And our commitment is to provide innovations that meet the very highest standards of quality and usability.

Now that you have an idea of who we are and how everything started, we hope this lamp can also help you, your family, and your friends. Most importantly, stay safe and healthy.
